Lake Turkana is a salt lake in Kenya. It covers 7,473 km². On average it is 32 m deep, and 109 m at its deepest point. Its surface lies 361 m above sea level.

The water

How warm is Lake Turkana?

The water is warmest in February, around 28 °C at the surface, and coldest in August, around 25 °C. The surface averages 20 °C or more from January to December: comfortable for most swimmers.

It does not normally freeze in winter.

On the shore, afternoons reach 36 °C on average in February and 33 °C in July. The driest month is February (9 mm of rain), the wettest April (105 mm).
